The first word that comes to mind when I think of this book is adorable, although I usually enjoy a good steamy romance I enjoyed the banter and interactions between the characters so much that I couldn't have cared less about the steamy parts (although I did enjoy those parts as well). The male narrator did a great job as well! This book made me laugh out loud so many times and tear up also. I absolutely loved it though, she is incredibly humorous and brings out the best in Nick. Tina is super peppy and positive most of the time despite terrible emotional scars and trauma, and let's face it, she's kind of a ditzy goofball. So we can be friends, right Wait, what I stare at her, a frown forming at my mouth. To be perfectly honest within the first 15 minutes of listening to this book I was about to give up on it.

Rob Armstrong, Erik Sander, and Ferd Poblete "In Twice-Born World, Wendell Mayo manages the seemingly impossible-to make his stories both steeped in post-Soviet Lithuanian sensibilities while also making them feel universal. I couldn't put this book down.- Daiva Markelis, author of White Field, Black Sheep: A Lithuanian-American Life Every story in Twice-Born World is a gem. As always, Mayo masterfully combines elements of the absurd with deeply poetic language. Mayo's characters, like Lithuania herself, long to connect to a more youthful, hopeful version of the past. In this volume, the themes are even more sharply delineated, with desire playing a more prominent role. In his new book, Twice-Born World: Stories of Lithuania, he resurrects themes from In Lithuanian Wood and The Cucumber King of K dainia: grief, loneliness, the impossibility of communication, the inexplicability of desire. Wendell Mayo captures the fractured, mournful soul of modern Lithuania like no other writer. A New Collection from Wendell Mayo, author of 'In Lithuanian Wood', and 'The Cucumber King of K dainia?. Having just read- Same Kind of Different As Me- you realize it's a lot longer than you think until people held America accountable to live up to the ideals put forth in the Constitution. It's pretty shocking, really, and to think how long it took for freedom to truly come about. I know it's a good book when it causes me to google things and learn more. We match, I note, as I take in his clothing. Seducing the king will prove to be a most enjoyable task, indeed. He’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, even when his features are set somewhere between boredom and irritation. The lines of his jaw are so sharp they could cut glass, and a healthy dose of stubble covers them. The sides are cropped short, but the hair up top has some volume to it, parted to the side. His hair is as black as the shadows around him. Once I adjust to the outline of shadow, I’m able to take in other features. Knowing what I have in store for him after our wedding night simply won’t do. I certainly hope that last one isn’t true. And even others say that the shadows speak to him, whispering the thoughts of those all around. Some say he can command the shadows to do his bidding, that he can use them to kill-choke the life out of his enemies. They say the Shadow King has some sort of power, but no one knows what it is. It has been adapted as film, made-for-television movies, animated, and live-action television series and is taught to students around the world. Written for all ages, it has been considered a children's novel since the mid-twentieth century. Since publication, Anne of Green Gables has sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into 20 languages. The series depicts Anne's experiences with living in a new town and becoming a woman. As a child, Anne is mistakenly sent to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who had intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm. The six books in this collection recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an orphan girl, as she grows up on Prince Edward Island. She outlines five foremost series of years where major trouble occurred within the Service. When President McKinley was assassinated in Buffalo in 1901, the Service was tasked with the full-time protection of the President of the United States.Ĭhronologically, The logic of Leonnig’s book breaks out this way. It began as a bureau in the Treasury Department whose job it was to suppress widespread counterfeiting, something it still tries to do. Some history: The Secret Service began in 1865, after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. “By telling their story,” she says, “they hope to revive the Service they love.” Leonnig is in awe of these people “willing to risk their careers” because they know the Service is broken and needs fixing. What needs fixing? Lots these include what she calls a toxic work culture, outdated equipment and resentment in the ranks with leaders protecting its image without fixing its flaws. She does this by interviewing current and former agents, government officials and whistle blowers who put their jobs on the line to speak about a hobbled agency in desperate need of reform. Leonnig’s power and authority in Zero Fail is in the marriage of the big picture with details that put a stamp of ‘true’ on her analysis. Fusing fantasy with magical surrealism and political satire, The Master and the Margarita is a pacy read set in 1930s Moscow. Like many people, I’m often wary of my literary abilities before beginning a Russian classic, but much like Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment – which I raced through – I was hooked from the get go with The Master and Margarita.Ī unique tale unlike anything I’ve read before, Mikhail Bulgakov’s much-loved book is considered by many critics as one of the best novels of the twentieth century, as well as the foremost of Soviet satires. I was then recently recommended it by someone I met at a party, and so I swiftly bought a copy from Gertrude and Alice, before settling in for a night of reading. It’s not a book I had heard of until I launched my Desert Island Books series, but after editor Sam Baker and Bookstagrammer Bookish Bronte both chose it as one of their desert island reads it was firmly on my radar. and often considered working my way through the additional hundred books that made the BBC’s Top 200 Books, particularly after finishing one of my most recent reads, The Mater and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. And while it was something of a relief when I finished the hundredth book just a matter of minutes before I turned thirty, in the months that have since passed I’ve missed having a list to choose from. When I decided to read the BBC’s Top 100 Books, my main reason for doing so was to expand my reading repertoire. |
